Must-see buildings

  • Kidderpore Docks

1780s onwards. Still working, though the deep-draught traffic goes to Haldia.

  • Metiabruz Shahi Imambara

Built by Wajid Ali Shah's court after 1856.

  • Fancy Market

Imported goods off the ships, and a trade that predates the customs union.

  • St. Stephen's Church

1845, and one of the quieter colonial churches.

Where to eat

  • India Restaurant

    Kidderpore

Mutton biryani, and a queue at eight in the evening.

  • Metiabruz biryani shops

    Iron Gate Road

Ask locally. The answers differ and all of them are good.

  • Fancy Market's kebab stalls

    Late afternoon

    Charcoal, on the pavement.

Things to see

  1. 01

    Fancy Market late afternoon

Bargain hard. Everything is negotiable and some of it is genuine.

  2. 02

    The Shahi Imambara

What is left of the second Lucknow.

  3. 03

    Kite flying in autumn

A Metiabruz inheritance, and still serious.
